How to Choose a Solar Installer
Your installer matters as much as the equipment. A great system poorly installed will underperform. Here's how to choose well.
CEC Accreditation
The Clean Energy Council (CEC) is the industry body for renewable energy in Australia. CEC-accredited installers have completed specific training and agree to a code of conduct. This is the minimum standard you should look for.
You can verify an installer's accreditation at the CEC website. If an installer can't provide their accreditation number, walk away.
Get at least 3 quotes
Never accept the first quote. Get at least 3 quotes from different installers to understand the market rate for your system size and location. Be wary of quotes significantly cheaper than others — this can indicate corner-cutting.
Read reviews — but read them properly
Don't just look at the star rating. Read what people say about: - Communication — did they explain things clearly? - After-installation support — what happened when something went wrong? - Timeline — did they deliver on time? - Pricing transparency — did the final price match the quote?
Pay attention to how companies respond to negative reviews. A professional response to a complaint is more telling than 100 five-star reviews.
Red flags to watch for
- •High-pressure sales tactics — "This price is only valid today"
- •No CEC accreditation — non-negotiable
- •Quotes that don't mention STCs — they may be pocketing your incentive
- •No physical business address — harder to follow up with warranty claims
- •Unusually cheap quotes — often means cheaper components or subcontracted installation
- •Won't provide a detailed written quote — everything should be in writing
Questions to ask every installer
- Are you CEC accredited? Can I have your accreditation number?
- Who will actually be on my roof — your own team or subcontractors?
- What is the STC value and how is it reflected in my quote?
- What happens if I have a problem after installation?
- Do you handle the grid connection paperwork?
- Can I see photos of recent installations similar to mine?
